Major and Minor Requirements

Major in Anthropology and Sociology*

A minimum of 10 courses, comprised of the three core courses and seven other ANSO courses of the student’s choosing, of which at least two must be at the 200-level, two at the 300-level and two at the 400-level.  Only one of the ten courses may be taken off-campus.

The Core (required):

            ANSO 103 Introduction to Culture and Society

            ANSO 212 Quantitative Analysis and Statistical Reasoning

            ANSO 245 Qualitative Research Methods           

Minor in Anthropology and Sociology

Number of Units:

A minimum of six courses.

Required Courses:

ANSO 103 Introduction to Culture and Society

Select the remaining five from all other courses, of which at least two must be 300- or 400-level courses. Only one of the six courses may be taken off campus.

*Transitioning to the New ANSO Department Curriculum

The impact of this curriculum change on the K’17, K’18, and K’19 cohorts are described below. The K’20 cohort will have transitioned completely to the new curriculum.

  • If you are in the K’17 cohort, the curriculum change does not impact you.
  • If you are in the K’18 cohort, then you must take one of two Junior Seminars offered in Spring 2017. In lieu of ANSO 490, you must also take one of the three ANSO 4OO-level courses offered next year.
  • If you are in the K’19 cohort, then you must take a minimum of nine ANSO courses, comprised of the three core courses (ANSO 103, ANSO 212, and ANSO 245) and six other ANSO courses of your choosing, at least one of which must be a 300-level class and at least one of which must be a 400-level class.
