The Center for Career and Professional Development

Check out PARADE Magazine’s recognition of “K” as an outstanding college offering “great internship opportunities,” from a national survey of high school guidance counselors.

Where in the world are our interns and externs this summer?

Our summer 2010 interns and externs are all over the globe. A total of 107 "K" students are gaining valuable experience in such fields as law, psychology, medicine, art, research, education, sustainability and marketing. Students develop a professional working relationship with their internship/externship sponsor, learn about the “real-world” applications of their liberal arts education, and contribute their skills and energy to the work of their placement.

The Discovery Externship Program connects current "K" students with alumni for 1-4 weeks during the summer. Only available to first-years and sophomores, externships are a great way for students to gain insight into possible career paths. Students also have the opportunity to stay with a "K" alum during their externship experience. The homestay provides the alum and the student with "porch time" – a time to connect outside of the normal work environment.

The Field Experience Program offers CCPD staff support and transcript notation to students engaged in summer internships of at least six weeks in duration. Within the FEP, there are three divisions: K-Internships, Community Building Internships, and Independent Internships. Unique to Kalamazoo College and new in 2009, K-Internships are extended only to "K" students by K alumni. Community Building Internships began in 2007 as a partnership between the CCPD, the Mary Jane Underwood Stryker Institute for Service-Learning, and various Kalamazoo community organizations, to provide a way for Kalamazoo College students to become involved in the city of Kalamazoo and build powerful partnerships with community organizations. Lastly, Independent Internships are sought and secured by students who research, identify, and apply for opportunities particularly suited to their professional aspirations.
