Discovery Externship Program Financial Considerations

The CCPD realizes that finances can be a deciding factor when committing to being an extern. Through the generous contributions of a few Kalamazoo alumni and other friends of the College, the CCPD is able to subsidize a significant proportion of the expenses associated with doing a Discovery Externship.

The Good News...

TRAVEL EXPENSES: CCPD partners with externs in funding half of the cost for travel, outside of a 100-mile radius of campus or the extern's home (see below for specific information about international externships).

  • PLANE or TRAIN TRAVEL
    • Extern purchases own airline/train tickets—reimbursement is provided upon submission of travel itinerary.
    • All costs due to any change or termination are the responsibility of the student.
    • Extern is responsible for communicating any changes to the sponsor and the CCPD.
  • AUTOMOBILE TRAVEL
    • Commuting expenses to and from externship are paid for out of the stipend given to each student (see below).
    • CCPD will provide a small travel stipend for driving expenses to and from an externship outside of a 100-mile radius of campus or extern's home.

HOUSING ARRANGEMENTS:

  • This is a generous contribution from K alums, providing an extern with free or minimal-cost housing.
  • Whenever possible, externships will come with a homestay provided by either the sponsor of the externship or an area alumna/us.

STIPEND: CCPD provides a modest stipend ($10/day) to help cover a small portion of actual expenses incurred during the externship, up to a maximum of 4 weeks in length.

  • USES: The stipend covers meals, bus fare, parking, commuting costs, etc. It is not to be used for personal items such as clothing or toiletries. Students are responsible for all other excess costs.
  • RECEIVING STIPEND:
    • Students are expected to set up Direct Deposit (done through the Portal). The stipend will be deposited directly into their bank account. To avoid interference with financial aid awards the stipend will be dispersed after June 15 in accordance with College policy. Students are responsible for any tax implications.

The Bad News...

WITHDRAWAL FROM PROGRAM

  • Extern is charged withdrawal fee of $250.00.
  • Full cost of the transportation ticket will be reimbursed to the CCPD.
  • Return of the full amount of the mini-grant and travel grant if applicable.

FAILURE TO FULFILL "PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES"

  • Extern will reimburse the CCPD all costs associated with the Discovery Externship experience.

NOTE: As participation in the program is a serious commitment and because important long-term relationships are at stake, students will be charged these fees accordingly. (It is your responsibility to communicate all financial obligations with whomever is responsible for paying your student account.) In the unfortunate event of illness, injury, or other extenuating circumstances, the CCPD reserved the right to waive the above policies.

A Note on International Externships...

Due to constraints of time, distance, and cost, international externships will likely represent a small proportion of our catalogue listings. Regarding the higher cost of international opportunities, students need to review the following options for funding support:

Option 1: The Discovery Externship Program will contribute 50% of the cost of the ticket and provide the usual stipend ($70/week) to help subsidize day-to-day expenses.

Example: Extern's round-trip flight to Luxembourg, for a two-week externship costs $1800, the student:

  • reimbursed $900 through the Discovery Externship Program budget for travel.
  • contributes $900 from personal resources.
  • receives $70/week through the Discovery Externship Program budget to apply towards actual expenses during the externship.

Option 2: Students may apply for a Beeler Project Grant through the CIP's Student Projects Abroad - Grants and Fellowships Program. Inquire with the CIP for more details about the grant application process and deadline.

Example: Extern's round-trip flight to Luxembourg, for a two-week externship costs $1800, the student:

  • reimbursed $900 through the Discovery Externship Program budget for travel.
  • receives $800 Beeler Project Grant (maximum award).
  • contributes $100 from personal resources.
  • receives $70/week through the Discovery Externship Program budget to apply towards actual expenses during the externship.
