Requesting a Tax Transcript

*It takes up to two weeks for the IRS income information to be available for electronic IRS tax return filers, and up to eight weeks for paper IRS return filers.

IRS Data Retrieval Tool

The best way to verify income is by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool that is part of the FAFSA on the Web.  Once a FAFSA has been filed and taxes have been processed*, log into your FAFSA record at www.fafsa.ed.gov and select "Make FAFSA Corrections."  Navigate to the Financial Information sections of the form.  Follow the instructions to determine if you are eligible to use the IRS Retrieval Tool to transfer IRS income tax information into your FAFSA.  If the IRS Data Retrieval is successful, a tax transcript is not necessary.
