Weimer K. Hicks Student Center LEED Silver Certification
In 2006, after much student petitioning, the renovation committee for the Hicks Student Center reverses an earlier decision and chooses to seek LEED certification for the building. The College worked with the architects and builders to make sure we met basic LEED certification standards. In addition, every effort to meet the criteria required for silver certification were investigated, provided that the standards were consistent with our plans for the primary functions of the building and that silver certification could be attained within the budget we had established for the project. Ultimately, Kalamazoo College was able to achieve a LEED Silver Certification on the renovation of its Hicks Student Center in 2008. The added energy efficiency of the building will save the College about $60,000 per year in utility costs.
