Composting at "K": Earth Tub Program

Kalamazoo College has recently approved the purchase of two Earth Tubs. Earth Tubs are machines specially designed for composting large amounts of food waste. These machines will be capable of recycling all of the cafeteria’s compostable waste. This a big step in waste reduction for the college, which already boasts a successful recycling program. The purchase of the Earth Tubs was proposed to the college in the spring of 2013 by two students. Upon learning of the end of the old compost program, students Samantha Jolly (K15) and Alicia Pettys (K13) created an independent study course to research alternative composting options. This self-designed course was a way for them to study what the college’s best option was for creating a compost program. In their final proposal, the students suggested that the school purchase two Earth Tubs. After some consideration, the college has decided to take their suggestion. The new compost program will begin in the fall of the 2013-14 school year.
