The Japanese program provides students with an exposure to the language, literature, and culture of Japan. Three years of Japanese language instruction is offered on campus, for a total of eight courses, with a balanced emphasis on listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students are strongly encouraged to begin the study of Japanese in their first year. TAs (visiting international students) from Japan enrich the language learning process.  Students may study abroad in Japan in one of three programs, ranging in length from six to nine months. Literature (in English translation) and culture courses acquaint students with the Japanese literary works and their historical and social contexts, including issues of gender. Other courses (in English) include Japanese Film, Language in Japanese Society, and Japanese Anime and Manga.
