Welcome New and Prospective Students

A vibrant and inspiring environment exists in the Department of Music at Kalamazoo College, where musicians -- majors and non-majors alike -- may take a range of rigorous academic courses, pursue private lessons with first-rate professors and faculty, and perform in our many ensembles.  Here, you will never be taught by a graduate assistant; at “K”, all students receive dedicated and focused attention from some of the finest professional musicians in Michigan.

What we offer

The Kalamazoo College Department of Music has many ways for you to remain musically active while engaged in a wide breadth of liberal arts studies.  If you are interested in music as a major or minor (or just in taking a few classes), we have a comprehensive series of academic courses in theory, history, and other subjects -- check out our course catalog

And the department is also full of opportunities to practically apply your musical skill.  There are private lessons for almost any instrumental/vocal background and level, as well as in composition and recording technology.  You can see the full list of offerings in the course catalog.  And you can learn more about the faculty that teach these courses, as well as get in touch with them, by visiting the faculty contact/bio link here.

We also have a comprehensive offering of ensembles, including

- the College Singers and Chamber Choir

- the Bach Festival Chorus

- the Symphonic Band

- the Jazz Band

- the Kalamazoo Philharmonia Orchestra

- and the International Percussion Ensemble

 Music and the Admissions Process

We actively seek artists in our admissions process to help make our campus thrive, and submitting arts-related materials with your K application can help your chances of admission and of winning financial aid, even if you don’t plan on majoring in music.

The additional materials required for what we call an arts supplement, submitted via SlideRoom, can be found here. These items are reviewed by us, the music faculty, and we report our recommendations to the admissions office.

Additionally, particularly advanced musicians are invited to submit just a few more materials, and apply for a special merit-based scholarship called an Enlightened Leader Award.  Learn more about this competitive scholarship award here.

The Larger Musical Community

The activities of the K College Department of Music are part of a larger tapestry of great performances in Kalamazoo: You’ll find a professional orchestra, an active downtown jazz scene, a world-class chamber music series, and the Gilmore Festival, North America’s largest biennial gathering of keyboard artists.  Look through a few of these links to get a sense of what is possible:

We would love to know more about you and your musical interests! Please take a moment to get in contact with us directly at the emails below.  We look forward to getting to know you!
