Who We Are

Since 1992, the Kalamazoo College Recycling Department has expanded its duties to incorporate the reduction of waste and re-use of items in addition to recycling.  Our department not only picks up and sorts recyclables, but also operates the Resource Exchange Program (REP), food composting, and the Helping Understand Bikes (HUB) program.

The beast front viewStudent workers run the recycling department under the guidance of a staff person. You'll find workers staffing the REP program, teaching students how to fix a bike, or picking up recyclables.

The vehicles that we use are almost as important as the dedicated staff members that drive them. The department has two electric-powered golf carts, affectionately named Meeka and the Beast. Much of the work that we do would take hours longer without Meeka and the Beast.

The fourteen-foot-long Beast embodies its name with its formidable size and dextrous maneuverability.  Workers load recycling bins on the back to take to the Cobra, the trailer where they sort the College's recycling. Meeka helps workers carry smaller loads, like items for the REP program or e-waste.
