Break Housing

During the academic year the residential system closes for both Winter Break in December and Spring Break in March.  This provides students with a much needed respite from campus to refresh and recharge, as well as a break for the Residential Life staff, and the opportunity for facilities projects to be completed in the residence halls.

  • Students must check out of their rooms by the advertised deadline, following the procedures that are posted on all residence hall room doors prior to the end of the quarter.  Students who fail to follow check out procedures are charged a $40 improper check out charge.  Students who check out late are charged $40 plus $10 per hour for each hour they are late.
  • Students may not stay in their rooms beyond the closing deadline nor are they permitted to return prior to opening.  All students are expected to make their travel arrangements accordingly.Students may leave their belongings in their room if they are returning to the same room for the following quarter.  However, the College recommends that students take valuables home.  Students not returning to their same room for the following quarter (study away, room change, etc.) must set up a time at least 24-hours in advance with a Resident Assistant to fully check out of their room prior to departure from campus.
  • Winter Break:  The only students who may request to stay on campus are international students, student athletes who must be on campus for practices or competitions, and students who are employed (at least 20 hours per week) on campus.  Athletes and campus employees are only permitted to stay on campus during the dates of practice/competitions and/or dates of employment.  Requests must be made in writing to housing@kzoo.edu by no later than Friday of 9th week of fall quarter.  There is no additional charge for housing over Winter Break.  Campus Dining Services are not available during Winter Break and students staying on campus are responsible for their own meals.  All College policies remain in effect for students on campus during Winter Break.  If a student’s behavior becomes problematic during the break, he/she will be required to vacate campus immediately.
  • Spring Break: The only students who may request to stay on campus are international students, student athletes who must be on campus for practices or competitions, students who are employed (at least 20 hours per week) on campus, and domestic students whose permanent residence is more than 450 miles away.  Requests must be made in writing to housing@kzoo.edu by no later than Friday of 9th week of winter quarter.  There is no additional charge for housing over Spring Break.  Campus Dining Services are not available during Spring Break and students staying on campus are responsible for their own meals.  All College policies remain in effect for students on campus during Spring Break.  If a student’s behavior becomes problematic during the break, he/she will be required to vacate campus immediately.
  • In order to be eligible for break housing during any break, a student must have a campus housing assignment for the following term. Students who are leaving the College, moving off campus, or will be away for the following term and do not have a housing assignment for the following term are not eligible for break housing. Students who do not have a housing assignment for the following term are required to check out of the residential system by the hall closing deadline.
