Kalamazoo College recently entered into a one-year partnership agreement with Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) to participate in AdviseMI, an initiative designed to help more Michigan students pursue postsecondary education. MCAN currently has partnerships with ten public institutions and two other small private colleges in Michigan, placing recent graduates of these institutions in high schools located in communities with low college-going rates and low adult educational attainment rates. AdviseMI advisers support students as they make the transition from high school to a postsecondary education institution, providing them with relevant information regarding the benefits of a postsecondary education, preparing for college attendance, and the admission and financial aid processes.

In Michigan, the average student-to-counselor ratio exceeds 706:1, and many high schools have inadequate capacity to provide one-on-one college advising to students. MCAN is committed to expanding the quantity and quality of college access professionals working in Michigan high schools.

In fall 2015, MCAN placed 40 well-trained recent college graduates as dedicated college advisors in 51 low-income Michigan high schools.  As a new partner for 2016-17, Kalamazoo College now has a guaranteed spot in the AdviseMI advising corps for a member of its Class of 2016 who wishes to get hands-on experience in education while encouraging a college-going culture and advising current high school students alongside permanent high school counseling staff.  The term of service runs July 2016 through June 2017, with the possibility of being invited to return for a second year.  Annual compensation includes a $24,000 service stipend and a $5,730 education award upon completion of the service term.  Interested seniors can learn more about the general position on the MCAN job board; full details about the K-specific position will be available on K-Connect shortly (and interested students should be sure to view the K-Connect version before applying).

The CCPD is honored to be involved in helping with recruitment and marketing of the AdviseMI position to soon-to-be K graduates. K seniors may also meet representatives of AdviseMI, including co-director Bristol Day ’07, at the CCPD’s Spring Recruiting Expo on April 6. Interviews for the open position will be held the third week of April.

AdviseMI is an AmeriCorps program made possible through a blended funding model with support from the State of Michigan, the Kresge Foundation, the Corporation for National and Community Service, host communities and partner institutions.
