Your Student has Chosen to Study Abroad!

Study abroad is an excellent opportunity for students to challenge their assumptions about themselves and other cultures in a rigorous experiential education environment. We encourage students to begin planning for study abroad during their first year.

During winter quarter the CIP distributes a "first year interest form" for students to complete. Given that many programs have language requirements and minimum grade point averages required for participation, our intention is to inform students early about their options. During this time we hope that parents talk with students about study abroad so that by sophomore year the student is prepared for the application and orientation process.

As with most significant experiences, preparation for study abroad begins long before departure. A required part of this preparation for all students participating in the College's study abroad program is the on-campus pre-departure orientation program. In keeping with the professional practices of NAFSA: Association of International Educators and the Inter-organizational Task Force on Safety and Responsibility in Study Abroad, required orientation sessions provide an overview of the program and the College's expectations for participants as well as important information concerning, but not limited to:

  • Student responsibilities and participation requirements
  • Health and safety issues and recommendations
  • Academic credits and requirements
  • Health services, requirements, and recommendations
  • Financial aid and student account requirements
  • Social, administrative, and academic policies in effect during study abroad
  • Customs, immigration, and visa requirements
  • Transportation arrangements
  • Home stay and university housing information
  • Intercultural transitions and adjustments

For more detailed information regarding what to expect, we recommend that you take a look at the links at the top of this page, and view our Parent Orientations via YouTube.
