Underloading Advice

Full Time Enrollment:

  • 2.4 units is considered full time enrollment for Financial Aid purposes
  • At this level of enrollment, you will receive your full financial aid award

  • 1.8 - 2.3 units is considered Underloading for Financial Aid purposes
  • At this level of enrollment, the following types of aid are reduced to 75% of full time award:
    • Michigan Competitive Scholarship
    • Michigan Tuition Grant
    • Federal Pell Grant
    • Byrd Scholarship
  • National Merit Scholarships are removed at this level of enrollment
  • Kalamazoo College Scholarships and Grants remain at 100% of award
  • Federal Loans remain at 100% of award

If you want to enroll for less than 1.8 units you must set up an appointment with the Office of Financial Aid to discuss how your aid will be affected.

Other considerations:

  • If you are on Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Probation, you must complete 3 full unit courses per term, therefore underloading will result in the cancellation of your financial aid eligibility for the next term.
  • If you are on Academic Probation of any kind you must talk to Zaide Pixley or your Academic advisor before underloading.
  • All students should discuss the decision with their advisor to make sure they understand how it will impact their ability to graduate on time, and student athletes must talk with their coach to make sure it will not impact their eligibility to participate.
