This page includes a schedule and details about Check-In Day and the arrival of participants on campus for LandSea. Also, there is a section of Check-In FAQS at the bottom of the page. For specific dates, look at the Dates & Times page.

Schedule

The 2018 Check-In Day Schedule will be very similar to the 2017 schedule. For reference, check out what last year's schedule looked like.

Day-Before Check-In Day
Out-of-state students may need to arrive in Kalamazoo early.  However, neither LandSea nor Residential Life is able to accommodate students who arrive before Check-In Day. Students who arrive early will need to arrange accommodations off-campus.  If you will be coming from outside of the region and will need to arrive on the day before Check-in, there are several hotels located near campus.  The Radisson located downtown, has an airport shuttle, and is less than one mile walking distance away from campus.  There are also several taxi services that you can call to setup a ride from the airport to your hotel as well as to the school.

Leisure Limousine and Sedan provides transportation from the airport (AZO).  It is $24 (not including tip) to the K campus.  Their number is 269-381-5460 and the agent is Lori.

Check-In Day
Check-In begins for Participants at 11 am.  Please note that there is often a long line at the beginning of Check-In and very short lines later in the day.  If you arrive early, we ask your patience as we move through bag checks and LandSea registration.  HOWEVER, PLEASE DO NOT ARRIVE ANY LATER THAN 12:30 pm as people have missed the bus in past years due to arriving too late in the afternoon.  If you cannot arrive before 12:30 on Check-In Day, we strongly urge you to arrive in Kalamazoo the night before.

Part of the check-in process will be a “bag check” which consists of our staff helping you bring what you need up to the Adirondacks and making sure that you leave behind anything that isn't necessary and/or not allowed  Also during this time period, you will check-in with Residential Life and get your student ID photo taken at the Office of Campus Safety. Your ID card will be made available to you upon your return to campus.

Lunch will be available for purchase in the cafeteria.

Any last minute LandSea related gear purchases can be made at a local sporting goods store, but options and time may be limited.   All participants receive 10% off from Lee's Adventure Sports, located a fifteen minute drive from campus. http://www.leesadventuresports.com/lees/

Students will be permitted to drop off their belongings in their dorm room (or secure storage area if their room is not available) during the LandSea check-in day. Some rooms may not be available due to summer camps, summer employee housing, or renovations. For rooms that are not available, students will be provided with a secure storage location in their residence hall to store their belongings.

Students will be let into their rooms to drop off belongings only, not to unpack and “settle in.” There might still be work needed to prepare the room while the student is on LandSea. Students will need to keep their belongings packed up and consolidated on the bed or in the closet/dresser. Students will receive their room key upon their return from LandSea and at that time can spend the next few days unpacking prior to Orientation. It is highly recommended that if parents are coming back to campus after LandSea that on the LandSea check-in day students bring only the necessities for their return (bedding, towel, toiletries, and change of clothes). Then parents can bring the rest of their belongings once students are back from the trip. Parents will not be permitted to bring belongings to campus or to be let into student rooms while students are away on LandSea.

You will be able to eat dinner in the college cafeteria prior to boarding the bus (students only).

Students will then board the bus and leave around 6:30/7:00 pm.

Please bring a small amount of money to purchase food at rest stops.  We recommend roughly $30.  This will cover your meals for the ride up, as well as the ride back.

You MUST bring some form of photo identification with you on the bus to be kept safe at base camp during the program.  Acceptable forms of ID include a driver's license, passport, or state-issued identification card.

*NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE BUS.  PLEASE DO NOT PLAN TO BRING PHONES, IPODS OR OTHER SUCH DEVICES

Note that if you arrive on campus and are ill or are displaying signs of a fever you may not be able to participate in the program for your own health and safety, as well as the health and safety of other LandSea participants and staff.  The severity of the condition will be determined at that time by the Student Health Center's Staff.  If you arrive on campus and are unable to participate in the program because of illness you will not be able to stay on campus and will be required to return home, providing your own transportation and travel accommodations.  The general cancellation policy for the LandSea Program that is listed here will be applied to cases like these.  We encourage everyone to stay healthy and safe over the weeks prior to the program in order to ensure that you can join us up in New York.

Check-In FAQs

Q:  What if I’m from far away?  Can I come to Kalamazoo the night before Check-In Day?

A:  Yes, but it is recommended only if it is impossible to get to campus on the Check-In Day before 12:30 pm.  If this is the case, students will need to make arrangements to eat and sleep off campus that evening. Upon request, we can recommend several hotels close to campus.

Q:  If I fly into Kalamazoo Airport, can I get picked up at the airport?  How about if taking a train or bus?

A:  We do not offer airport, train, or bus station pick-up.  We recommend that you arrange for a taxi service to pick you up and take you to your hotel or see if your hotel offers an airport shuttle.

Q:  What can I bring the first day?  Just LandSea stuff or can I bring my other stuff?

A:  Students are permitted to bring whatever belongings they wish on LandSea check-in day. Students will be let into their room (or secure storage area if their room is not available) to drop off belongings. However, students will not have the opportunity to unpack and “settle in” until they return from LandSea. It is highly recommended that if parents are coming back to campus after LandSea that on the LandSea check-in day students bring only the necessities for their return (bedding, towel, toiletries, and change of clothes). Q:  Can I move into my residence hall on Check-In Day?

A:  Students will be permitted to drop off their belongings in their room (or secure storage area if their room is not available) during the LandSea check-in day. Some rooms may not be available due to summer camps, summer employee housing, or renovations. For rooms that are not available, students will be provided with a secure storage location in their residence hall to store their belongings.

Upon your arrival back on campus you will be granted access to your dorm room and will be able to start moving in.

Q: When is it best for my parents to come out and help me move in?

A: It is best to plan move in activities after your return to campus and before orientation. You will have  almost a day and a half to do any move-in activities you need before Orientation begins. There is also time scheduled into orientation to move into your residence halls.

Q:  Where is the local Grocery store?  Airport?

A:  There is a Walgreens within walking distance of campus and grocery and specialty camping stores a few miles away.  The nearest airport is the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (code:  AZO) and is approx, 8 miles from campus.
