Meeting Minutes

October 30th, 2009

For those of you who couldn't make it on our Kal-Haven bike trip this past weekend, we missed your presence but you most likely stayed warmer.  Saturday was somewhat rainy and cold.  However, buy nightfall, the cloud cover had lifted and we were able to enjoy a sunset over lake michigan and a bright moon for the rest of the night.  Sunday's return ride back to Kzoo brought along with it some more pleasant weather and everyone was back on campus by 2:30/3:00-ish.  If you would like to see some pictures from the trip, go to

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, November 4th, in Hicks 110 at 6:30-7:15 pm.  All are welcome to attend regardless of prior KOC attendance or experience.  Items to discuss:

Follow up with Trip planners:  What worked, what didn't?  How to improve planning process.  This will be important for anyone specifically thinking about planning their own KOC trip in the future.  Remember, if you plan it all out, you get to go for free!

Future trip:  Nothing is set in stone yet, but the arboretum is looking into having a volunteer saturday afternoon.  Transportation will be provided as well as a light lunch.  Tentative times would be to leave campus at 11 am and be back here by 3:00 pm.  The goal of this trip is to introduce people to the arb, get veteran visitors back out there, and to help maintain the grounds.  Trip is weather dependent and more information will be provided later.  Right now, "possible" event date is Saturday, November 7th.  Trip Fee: $0.00   It's free

Future trip:  Need a break from studying?  November 21st, Saturday, we will be heading to the Kalamazoo Nature Center located 15 minutes north of downtown for an afternoon from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm.  The KNC is a not-for-profit organization located in Kalamazoo, Michigan whose mission is to inspire people to care for the environment by providing experiences that lead them to understand their connection to the natural world.  We will explore some of the 14 trails covering over 10 miles on 1,100 acres of varied habitats from ponds to prairies, tall pines to old growth forests.  We will also take some time to check out the local bird, fish, and other wildlife sanctuaries they have on display.  More info, including sign-up to come.  Trip Fee:  $10.00  Cap. Limit 24 people.   Check them out at

Future trip:  Manistee River Trail-NCT loop.  December 5th, 6th, and 7th.  20 miles of beautiful trail traversing both sides of the river, once along the SE border over fields and forested lowlands.  Then cross the bridge and walk back along the NW edge of the river following the ridge line.  Plan on leaving early in the morning on the 5th and return to campus late the night of the 7th.  More info to come.  Trip Fee:  $35.00 proposed.  Cap. Limit 12 people.

As always, we have gear available to rent and/or purchase from the gear room located in trowbridge basement.  Open on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4-8 pm.  Want something for the weekend, or need a pack for your term abroad?  Let us know what you're looking for.
